Raising awareness on social accountability and its significance is one of our primary objectives. Although social accountability, as a concept, is somehow new to the Arab World, several applications of social accountability actually exist across the region. ANSA-AW aims at raising awareness of the different stakeholders (governments, civil society organizations, media outlets and private institutions) on how social accountability offers a collaborative framework through which service providers are held accountable. Not only do we plan to raise awareness on the theoretical framework of social accountability, but also on its practical tools.
ANSA-AW further aims at raising awareness on the ANSA-AW pillars (access to information, budget transparency, freedom of association and monitoring and evaluation of public services). These pillars are vital for social accountability as they contribute to creating an enabling environment for social accountability. The awareness raising efforts therefore aim at promoting these pillars across different levels ranging from policy makers and executive officials to civil society advocates and media.
The ANSA-AW awareness raising efforts are channeled through both oral and written means that ranges from giving presentations at regional events, organizing country-level workshops, and producing publications. Up to March 2013, the ANSA-AW has organized awareness raising workshops on social accountability in six Arab countries that were attended by over 400 participants from the government, civil society, media and private sectors. The ANSA-AW has produced a number of promotional fliers and posters on social accountability. The ANSA-AW is also publishing a quarterly thematic bulletin that includes information on the ANSA-AW pillars.
